Committed to environmental friendliness

The current environmental situation we find ourselves in, the serious degeneration of our planet and the shocking social and workplace exploitation revealed by the latest UN reports are alarming. For this reason, the UN recommend making a strong and responsible change in favour of the creation of a new model which is more environmentally friendly.

SDG Commitments

“The UN General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, an action plan designed to favour people, the planet and prosperity, which also intends to strengthen universal peace and access to justice. The Member States of the United Nations approved a resolution in which they recognise that the greatest challenge in today’s world is the eradication of poverty and also affirm that without achieving this goal there can be no real sustainable development. The Agenda proposes 17 Goals with 169 objectives of an integrated and indivisible nature within these, that contemplate economic, social and environmental spheres.”

This concern has sparked an increase in the number of companies in the market seeking to offer the manufacturing and distribution of sustainable products.

92 million tonnes of textile waste are generated globally each year, of which between 75 and 85% are burned or end up in landfills. If we look at Spain alone, up to 800,000 tons of clothing and accessories end up being thrown in the rubbish without any chance of a second life, which means this figure represents 90% of all textiles, according to data taken from the Iberian Association of Textile Recycling. If the current rate of consumption continues in the same way, the industry will be responsible for 25% of greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. This type of production emits the equivalent of 1.2 billion tons of CO2, even more than maritime transport and international air travel.

Committed to our environment

At BALUARD Barcelona, we want to make sure we take responsibility and do our part in getting involved in this change. As a result of this, from the very foundation of the brand we have decided that we’ll focus our efforts on the following Sustainable Development Goals. (SDG)

Goal 8:

DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH: Promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth.

Our company was born in the Barceloneta neighbourhood within the Ciutat Vella district. This district is currently the one that represents the lowest per capita income in the entire city of Barcelona. The area had 10,177 people registered as unemployed in March 2021, representing 10.6% of this group in Barcelona, while 45.1% of the unemployed population in the district are women.

Through taking clear actions, BALUARD BARCELONA wants to take part in improving this situation, contributing to the growth of Ciutat Vella’s business community.

We care about the people we work with and we build long-term relationships with our community. Offering employment, promoting in particular the employment of young women with difficulties in accessing their first job or women over 45 years of age who are long-term unemployed residents of Ciutat Vella.

We strive to ensure that 50% of our production comes from workshops made up of women at risk of social exclusion and we will ensure that those who work with our products earn a fair wage and are treated with respect and dignity.

Goal 9:

INDUSTRY, INNOVATION AND INFRASTRUCTURE: Build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialisation and foster innovation

At BALUARD BARCELONA we always want to know the origin of our raw material, what our products are made of, who makes them, how they are made, who offers them to our customers and how, as well as the impact of our industrial processes on the environment. We carry out our activity in a responsible and environmentally friendly way, taking into account the increasing scarcity of the planet’s natural resources.

We centre everything we do on small km0 production, meticulously complying with our quality standards. We don’t support overproduction and we try to manufacture in a way that generates an absolute minimum amount of waste, including a  ZERO WASTE product in our collection.

On the other hand, we take an active role in events and keep ourselves informed of the latest news in the world of textile and fashion sustainability R&D in order to constantly improve our products and manufacturing processes. We are dedicated to transparency across all of our manufacturing processes, and we recommend that our clothing be taken to a recycling drop-off point when it is no longer going to be worn.

Objective 12:

RESPONSIBLE PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION: Ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns

Sustainable consumption and production is about doing more and better with less. It is also about breaking the link between economic growth and environmental degradation through the promotion of sustainable consumption.

BALUARD BARCELONA’s collections are created in a conscious way based around clear intentions, forming part of the Slow Fashion trend that reflects all of its production processes while seeking to ensure the quality of each product. All products are created to be long-lasting and sustainable over time, reducing and avoiding overproduction and with the intention of production that generates an absolute minimum amount of waste. The raw materials used are high-quality, natural, sustainable, recycled or manufactured with the least environmental impact and also certified.

Our business model does not set out to present monthly collections, nor does it encourage compulsive buying that consists of consuming and discarding clothing. This is owing to the fact that we take into account the shocking impact consumerist attitudes are having on our planet (energy consumption and high CO2 emissions).

Objective 13:

CLIMATE ACTION: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its effects

2019 was the second hottest year of all time and marked the end of the hottest decade (2010-2019) ever recorded.

Levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere rose to record levels in 2019.

At BALUARD BARCELONA,  we care about the impact of our production process. As a fashion label, we have opted for local km0 production in order to mitigate our CO2 footprint as much as possible by working with local suppliers, housing our facilities here in Barcelona and maintaining a small and local production structure.
